Tell me about... Deciding what type of website I need

Read through the following prompting questions and if necessary make some notes in order to establish what type of website you need:

What do you want from your website? Is it simply an online presence for your business, or do you want to offer a particular service to your customers via the web?
Do you need interactive features such as contact forms or questionnaires, or perhaps a mailing list setting up?
Do you intend to sell directly over the internet?
What about images? Do you want photographs, or perhaps custom graphics?
Do you have an existing corporate style that needs to be reflected in the website? Or do you require Yellow Monkey to assist in developing a style?

The web is but a canvas to the imagination. Have a look around the internet and see what you like and what works, and equally keep a look out for things that annoy you.

Use a search engine such as Google to find out what websites come up when you type in certain terms, and try to work out what your competitors are offering with their website.

Tell me about... Getting started

In order to start your website we will initially require answers to the above questions, and where necessary copies of all logos and photographs to be included in the website. Website copy will also need to be supplied for all pages, along with details of your current web hosting provider. If you do not have a web hosting provider we can assist you in this service (link).

If you require help arranging any of the above, please contact us where we can advise on the best course of action. It is our intention to make the process of creating a website as smooth and simple for you (the customer) as possible.

Tell me about... Web hosting

Every website must be hosted on a server in order for it to be accessible 24hrs a day from anywhere in the world. There are numerous web hosting options available, ranging from free-space with your internet service provider, to fully paid hosting with daily back-up facilities. Yellow Monkey would prefer that you consult us before selecting a web-host, as the choice can affect whether certain functions will be available.

Tell me about... Domains

You will need a domain name for your website. It is usually best to choose a domain which reflects the name and nature of your business, or perhaps an acronym of your company initials depending on availability.

Yellow Monkey can assist you in choosing and purchasing a domain name, and would prefer that you contact us before selecting a domain, as a bad choice of name can have serious repercussions at a later date.

Make sure you read the domain name aloud to yourself and a colleague several times before making a decision, as it is important that it sounds right.

Tell me about... Updating my own website

If you want to be able to carry out updates to your own website we can configure our online editing system to run on your website (subject to your choice of web host). This is accessed via a unique username and password combination, and is embedded within your website structure for security purposes.

Tell me about... The difference between a search engine and a web directory?

Search engines index sites by an automatic process without the intervention of a human being; directories are compiled by human beings who look at websites to see if they wish to include them in the directory.
